county road fields

The protection of County Road Fields as open space was finalized in July 2004 when residents of Guilford overwhelmingly approved the purchase of 13 acres of meadowland on County Road in North Guilford from Alison and William Brierly for $360,000. The land trust and the Town of Guilford each funded half the purchase under the landmark preservation partnership.

The effort to keep the property as open space began when neighbors of the property, which was for sale for residential development, approached the land trust for assistance. Neighbors subsequently pledged the bulk of the land trust's contribution to the open space purchase. The land trust holds the conservation easements to the land.

In addition to monetary donations, two property owners on the northern side of the Brierley property gave the land trust conservation easements over their lots to increase the size of the open space to approximately 25 acres. Another homeowner on the eastern side of the property allowed the town to use a strip of his land to create an access trail from the Brierly property to the nearby Shoreline Outdoor Education Center, where visitors to County Road Fields may park.
